Have you heard of oil pulling? At Pine Seven Dental Centre in Woodbridge, we recommend this holistic oral treatment to help with oral health and detoxification.
What is coconut oil pulling?
This technique is an Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil around the mouth to draw toxins out of the body. Oil pulling is an easy and inexpensive way to improve the balance of microorganisms in the mouth and improve overall health. We recommend coconut oil over other oils for its antimicrobial properties and because of its subtle flavour that is pleasing to most individuals. Sesame oil, olive oil or almond oil can work as well.
Brushing and flossing are obviously important for oral hygiene but oil pulling has some unique benefits. Some of these benefits include
- Prevention of dryness of the lips, mouth and throat
- Overall strengthening of the teeth, gums and jaw
- Prevention of bad breath
- Eliminating bacteria and virus-laden organisms from the mouth, gums, and throat
- Prevention of tooth decay and cavities
- Whitening teeth
- Detoxing the mouth and body
How do you oil pull?
You can choose to oil pull at any time of day, though most do it first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.
Take coconut oil (about a tbs) put in your mouth and swish around for 10-15 minutes. Avoid gargling the oil but instead use slow pulling motions and be sure to get the oil to all areas of the mouth.
After finishing the oil swishing, spit the oil into the garbage. Go ahead and brush your teeth as you normally would to help eliminate any other toxins that would still be in your mouth.
We believe that oil pulling seems to be an excellent complementary strategy (along with daily brushing and flossing) to improve your oral hygiene, and is a practice definitely worth trying!
